Point to Point Broadcasts from Teradek

June 7, 2013 Broadcast & Playout News Press Releases Reviews 0

Teradek Cube and Brik encoders provide a powerful, compact wireless solution for point to point broadcasts. Both devices utilize high profile H.264 compression and support resolutions up to 1080p at 5mbps over dual band a/b/g/n WiFi or 10mbps over Ethernet. The Teradek Cube comes in HD-SDI or HDMI varieties, whereas the camera-back Brik offers HD-SDI inputs only. Each encoder has an easy to use OLED display for rapid configuration and a rechargeable Li-Ion battery, which enables users to swap external power sources without powering the unit down. For the most challenging broadcast applications, Teradek also offers Bond and Link; two transmission systems with enhanced connectivity over bonded cellular, WiFi or hardwired networks.
Teradek Cube decoders are nearly identical to Cube encoders and are offered in HD-SDI or HDMI varieties. For cellular broadcasts, the Teradek Base is an integrated decoding solution for video feeds transmitted over the Teradek Link or Bond. As an alternative to an Amazon EC2 instance, Base de-bonds and decodes your video feed from a single rack mount server with an HD-SDI output.

Choose Your Destination

Teradek encoders can be paired with Cube decoders for low latency, high definition point to point streaming for use with video switchers, IMAG setups, or monitors at video village. Cubelets, as these pairs are called, are multicast compatible, require very little power, and include a hardware-based deinterlacer. Teradek Cubelets send and receive video via a shared access point over WiFi, directly through Master Mode, or over the Internet using transport protocols such as RTSP and MPEG-TS. With the addition of a Zixi license, Cube and Brik encoders can stream using Zixi cloud services to a Teradek H.264 decoder to achieve flawless broadcast quality video without regard for distance or network congestion.
While streaming to a decoder, you can utilize Teradek’s encoders’ features simultaneously such as monitoring the feed on your iOS device and saving proxies to the on-board SD card.

Bond: Point to Point Over Cellular

For live broadcasts from the field, the Teradek Bond gives Cube and Brik encoders maximum connection bandwidth and reliability to ensure your content reaches its destination at the highest quality possible. As a camera-top, micro cellular bonding solution, Bond gives you the option to stream from nearly anywhere over five 3G/4G modems without adding weight to your rig or requiring monthly usage fees. Since Bond connects to the Cube or Brik encoder via USB, setup is extremely quick and you get to utilize all of the same great features Teradek encoders already offer, including on-board proxy recording and monitoring your live stream with your iOS device or via the SDI loop-throughs on Brik.

Sputnik Server

To recombine the various video feeds from Bond’s or Link’s modems into a cohesive stream, your live feed must first be transmitted to a Sputnik server hosted on Amazon’s EC2 cloud or to a Linux computer with a publicly addressable TCP port. Sputnik is Teradek’s free software application between Bond or Link and your streaming destination. Video feeds sent to a Sputnik server can be transmitted to up to 20 Teradek decoders simultaneously at any location worldwide.

Teradek Sputnik

Teradek Sputnik

Base: Turnkey Sputnik Server & Decoder

As an alternative to Amazon’s EC2 cloud, the Teradek Base is a turnkey rack mount Sputnik server with a built-in HD-SDI Cube decoder. This particular combination provides a seamless broadcast experience from the field directly to your station without any intermediary connections in the cloud.

Dashboard

To monitor the status of your Bond or Link broadcast, Teradek has introduced the Dashboard utility. Dashboard is a web application that allows you to monitor your modems’ status, bit rate, latency, and data usage in real time.

Link: Point to Point Over Bonded Cellular Hotspot

The Teradek Link offers broadcasters a whole new workflow for transmitting live HD video back to the station without worrying about cellular dead zones. As a bonded V-mount cellular hotspot, Link can easily be placed in locations with optimal signal reception so camera crews can roam freely at up to 300 feet away for long periods of time without concern for poor signal strength or short battery life. This freedom is achieved by connecting one or more Teradek encoders to Link’s a/b/g/n WiFi network. After receiving audio and video from the encoder, Link intelligently broadcasts the feed over up to 6 aggregated 3G/4G cellular connections to a Sputnik server in the cloud or at your station. From Sputnik, your video feed is then sent to your Teradek or IPTV decoder.

Teradek Link

Teradek Link

802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi Over Cellular

Link, just like Bond, is capable of using all of the award-winning features of the Cube and Brik encoders while streaming, such as monitoring on iOS devices, on-board proxy recording, and seamless external battery swapping. Additionally, Link provides dual Ethernet jacks for hardline reliability and supports connections from any 802.11 enabled device, which means you can check your email or upload files over Link’s Internet connection while streaming your video content.

Zixi: Flawless Broadcast Quality

With a Zixi-licensed Cube or Brik encoder, camera crew can stream wirelessly to an Ethernet-connected Link and then to Zixi’s cloud services for highly reliable, broadcast-quality video over volatile networks.
